If you’d like a job working for Texas A&M University, there are several excellent jobs open at the moment. My department is seeking a Microcomputer Specialist, my old position in Athletics is open, and a MS-SQL DBA job in Admissions & Records that I turned down has bumped up it’s stated pay range.
College Station is a great place to live in Texas — mild weather compared to Dallas or the coastal plains, no traffic, and an exceptionally cheap cost of living. I’m not kidding — I’ve not yet managed to get a bar tab north of $20 here in town. In Portland, it was normal to spend $50-$150 in a single night. And I’m still young enough to date undergrads!
Cost of living is an important part of picking a job. Expect to pay between $450 and $1000 for a nice two-bedroom apartment in town, depending on how close to campus and how old of a structure you rent. I share a house with another computer geek; we each pay $500/mo. I’m banking at least half of every month’s pay right now. Pay rates in Austin aren’t much better and the cost of living is huge. I made as much this year as my sister, who lives in the Bay Area, did… and her 600 sq. ft. apartment’s rent is $1380/mo.
Anyway, head on over to TAMUjobs and apply. If you want to email privately me to ask me about any of these three jobs, do feel free to contact me via the contact form.
Curious, what is the pay range for a Microcomputer Specialtist at A&M. I just applied for the position. Thanks, Dave.

Dave - I’m not quite sure. About all I know is that it’s in the 30’s — all of the “I” positions at TAMU are about the same in pay scale. Good luck — the old guy’s last day was last Friday, so I know they’re looking to hire soon!

Hi, Dave, I have been trying for about 6 months to get a job at Texas A&M. I’ve applied for the Microcomputer job. Do you think it would be helpful if I fowarded my resume to you? Any help would certainly be appreciated. Thank, Frank.

Frank, considering that Dave is also a candidate for a job at A&M, it might not help at this point to forward your resume to him. ![]()
After the first of the year, we’ll close the pool for the microcomputer specialist job and interview the candidates. I don’t know what the status of any of the other jobs is right now.
