A few times on this blog, I’ve referenced Eowyn’s struggle with Hip Dysplasia. Eowyn is my two year old Rhodesian Ridgeback cross puppy. She was dropped off at a vet clinic that my Ex was working at during her veterinary education, and came to live with me four months later. She’s the love of my life, the most faithful companion a guy could ask for, and has the best combination of intelligence, spirit and energy I’ve ever seen contained in one furry being.

Update: Eowyn now has her own blog.

We first realized that she had trouble walking after her first birthday. Since then, she’s deteriorated rapidly. This past March, Eo went lame on her right leg from overuse, as she can hardly put any weight on the left leg. It was time to turn up the therapy — first a drug regemin, and then a meeting with the good people down at the Texas A&M Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

I’m creating these pages as a journal of our struggle to get her operation done and rehabilitate her. This will be a long journey — the operation is scheduled for late May, and the rehabilitation could take up to a year if we do everything perfectly. Luckily, I’ve kept her weight down and her muscles toned by our 2+ daily walks, and have been feeding her food that’s supplemented with minerals and compounds that help keep her joints stable.

If you’re willing, there’s also an Amazon store, and a donation ‘bin’ with PayPal. Using the Amazon site costs you nothing extra — but gives me a little kickback. I’ve found that Eo’s preferred foods and treats are all available on Amazon for about $5-15 less than in stores, and shipping is free over a certain point, so I just order a lot at once.

Please feel free to add comments and advice on any of the posts in this section. Eowyn is definitely not the first dog who’s gone through this struggle, and won’t be the last.
