Hi, I've been reading all of your post in the last week or so. Im a 29 year old mother of 4 and have a wonderful boyfriend that has been dealing with being so sick with my tonsils since April. I never want to see my regular doctor, my boyfriend would rush me to the emergency room when 1 out of 5 times they gave me meds. And the 4 other times side it was viral and it will go away when the virus goes away. Remind you that I couldn't bend down or even get out of bed, IT SUCKED. My last visit to the ER my strep came back negative the dr keep caming into the room to check my tonsils and finally said that Im referring you to a ENT specialist. I made a appt. for ASAP so the specialist can see my tonsils in action. Well the specialist came in looked at my tonsils and said that they were enlarged and told me what the options are either take meds when the next infecton came or not to take meds are the other solution is taking them out. I might sound crazy but I automatically said removed them. I told him what I know about the procedure he said I know alot and they'll gave me liquid percet and the office will call to schedule the surgery. Well I have the surgery date and its July 14, 2010. I need a honest advice what I should expect with pain, recovery time and etc. ( My boyfriend can only take a week off and not sure if my mother can come down after that.) Please gave me any advice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks
Erica, first of all congrats on the first step of making the appointment. To some, that is the scariest part of all. Second, everyone's body heals differently. I am 29 as well and I had my tonsils taken out 4 days ago. Now mind you it has not been a walk in the park but like many people on this forum have advised, make sure that you stay on top of the pain. This means making sure that you sleep in shorter spurts so you can drink fluids to keep the throat moist. A cool air humidifier is also a very good investement if you have not already needed one for one of your children (I know I needed one when I was a child). Make sure that you have ice pops on hand and personally I have also used an herb called Slippery Elm. It is all natural and it is great for sore throats and it does not taste terrible. As for the pain level, that can only be determined by how well you take care of yourself. Mine has not been unbearable but again, I make sure I drink plenty of water and that I keep my throat as moist as possible. Now I have been told the worst may still yet to come as the scab falls off but honestly I think as long as I keep my body prepared for that, everything will be good. And so will you. Just remember, this is surgery. Not to be taken lightly. Listen to the doctors. Take what the doctors give you and please let your lovely boyfriend take care of you. Just take it easy dear and I am sure by the end of the week you will be able to deal on your own. I had someone take care of me for two days and I had to get back to work because I was in the middle of a big project. So for you to have a week is awesome, so take advantange of it. So in closing, drink plenty of fluids even if it hurts to swallow just do it, take your meds on time every day and keep that throat as moist as possible. If you do that, then I think you will do well. Oh, and as much as it may suck try to stick to soft foods as long as you can stand it. I know there are some people on here that went back to eating "cheeseburgers and fries" after just 5 days but to ensure that your body sheds the scab naturally and that you are not ripping it off which will just cause more bleeding and pain and possible infection, treat yourself to some smoothies and mashed potatoes as long as possible. Good luck dearie and again congrats! You have made the right decision to take care of this on going issue. One week down for the rest of your life tonsil free seems worth it to me. :-)
Hi,
If your tonsil problems are chronic, take em out! There's data out there that suggests that people with chronic tonsilitis and other throat infections are more prone to develop throat cancers. Take em out. I'm on Day Three of post-op, and it's no fun, but I'm so far/so glad.
Good luck!
Hi there,
I'm 37 and it took me many years to get work up the courage to go to the ENT about my tonsils. But today I actually had my tonsils out and I know it's still early but so far drinking lots of water, icing my neck and taking the pain meds has been working wonderfully. I've even had some ice cream and sherbet already. I think you've already been given some great advice. I just wanted to add a little additional support.
