    Hi there,
Well I had my tonsils out today and I know I have a long way to go but I have to say, so far it has been a pretty good experience. I'm 37 years old and this is my first ever surgery (I've been a lucky person). I have always had extremely large tonsils that have caused breathing difficulties but back when I was child I saw several ENTs and they all refused to remove them because I didn't have the sore throats. Flash forward to my 30's and I had severe tonsillitis a couple of times of year and lovely pits (craters) and tonsil stones along with the funky breath. And continued sleep apnea. Last year I read an article about how tonisllectomy surgery is on the increase in adults due to breathing problems so I thought I'd try a trip to one more ENT just to see what she would say and she took one look and said she'd take them out and they were the largest she's ever seen.

So the surgery went well today after all the admitting procedures the surgery itself was only 45 minutes with anesthesia and wake up time. I'm drinking lots of water taking the meds and continuously icing the outside of my throat and so far I would say the pain is no worse than some of my worst sore throats probably a 5 on the little pain threshold index. Interestingly I was given percocet pills instead of liquid vicodin because my doctor said it caused less nausea. I was nervous about swallowing the pills but it's been ok. I have been taking a half dose of the pills and they are working out fine. If all goes well I'm going to try and stop using them after a day or so because percocet does scare me a little. I'll keep posting some updates for anyone who's interested. I was terrified but reading about other experiences really helped me.
    Hope this helps anyone else,
    Erin

Day 3 and things are going well. I'm taking less pain medicine because I don't really like how it's making me feel and I think some scabs are forming because I feel something weird in the back of my throat. I was just wondering if it was normal for things to smell weird because I'm experiencing some weird smells. I'm still chugging water and sticking to ice cream and pudding. I had some broth which was a nice change of pace and I tried some instant mashed potatoes but I think it's a little too soon for those because they really made my throat sore. Other than that so far so good, I'm managing with the pain. The hardest part is not being able to spend much time with my almost 2 year old daughter. She doesn't really understand what's going on. I'd love to hear any suggestions on other foods people found were easy to eat.

Day 6 My best day so far. I'm off the pain meds and I feel so much better. They made me nauseous and groggy and honestly my pain wasn't bad during the day. I just felt worse at night probably because I was exhausted. I had been sleeping in the recliner for the past few days because when I'd try to sleep in the bed, my throat would dry out as I slept and I'd wake up coughing. Well last night I decided no more pain meds, and I was going to sleep in my bed. Shortly before bed, I developed a ferocious headache and stiff neck. I think mostly from laying around propped up and sleeping in the recliner and I also wondered if the headache was med withdrawal even though I only used 1 pill a day for the past 2 days. Well I went to bed and tossed and turned and everytime I woke up I chugged from the water bottle by my bed and when I woke up this morning - I felt the best I've felt yet. No headache, no stiff neck, no nausea just a little scratchy in the throat. I can feel the scabs which is annoying but the pain has greatly decreased. Overall I would say that during this whole experience the pain I felt never surpassed the pain I've had with previous throat infections so this has definitely been worth it.

Day 8 - I had my post op check up today. The doctor said she was very pleased with how I was recovering. I have small scabs and the doctor said she was hopeful that they would just slowly dissolve over time. I'm expanding my eating - I had my mom's noodles and cabbage last night - so yummy and I also had some baked ham which was soft but harder to swallow than the noodles. I've also had lots of mac and cheese and mashed potatoes. Good thing I'm a carbaholic. For the most part I have very little pain, it's mostly just tender by the evening after talking and eating all day it's a little more sore but no sharp pain. I'm sleeping with no problems and still drinking lots and lots of water. I really believe the water has been the most useful part of my recovery. My doctor cautioned me to continue to take it easy even though I was feeling better, she warned me against overexerting myself and straining the sores in my throat. So I'll relax for a few more days - I'm still off from work all next week and I'll see how everything goes.

Day 11- The progress continues. I have not experienced any problems with the scabs that I'm aware of except for the strange taste in my mouth. They appear to be dissolving slowly (due to all the water) rather than coming off in chunks. Yes, I'm still chugging ice water - it may be an addiction. I'm eating a variety of foods that are still pretty soft- I had a cheese enchilada last night and it was the best thing I'd tasted in a awhile. It was soft and gooey and not too spicy so it was perfect. I'm still eating a lot of puddings and soups but I made pancakes for the family today so that was nice change of pace too. I'm still a little tender on my right side, the left feels fine. In the evening after talking all day my throat feels a little scratchy but not bad at all. I'm trying to get up and do more and more each day but sometimes it still feels like I get tired easily - that could be the fact that I'm eating less food and lounging around. Anyway- it's going so well I may attempt a trip to the zoo with the my mother and my daughter tomorrow. It's a small zoo and my mom will be there to help.

Day 14 - Well it's been 2 weeks and the recovery continues to go well. My throat felt a little more tender yesterday but it's doing ok today. I still have small scabs but they seem to be dissolving slowly and not coming off in chunks. Today is my first day on my own with no help from my mom or husband and it's going fine. I've been carrying my daughter around and doing some light cleaning and it's still going well. I don't predict any major hurdles at this point and just hope that I continue to improve everyday.
